Why this antique mirror is made from bronze?
The mirror in Japanese ancient culture represents light, truth and wisdom …as it reflects what is seen and what is true…much to the horror of many of us when we look at ourself in the mirror
These are sometimes called geisha mirrors. This one, Made in the late 19th or early 20th century, so from the Meiji period…is just a such lovely thing…the decoration is cast with cranes which represent marital fidelity and bliss and the trees symbolising strong will and perseverance against the inevitable terbulamt and testing times of life
So why did the Japanese make metal mirrors…The Japanese and many other cultures have been casting metal mirrors, mainly from bronze or copper for well over 2000 years …sometimes with a nickel coating to give a mirror Polish finish. They did this prior to the invention of mirrored glass…but the tradition for metal mirrors simply carried on

Metal mirrors are a far older tradition than glass ones in the West too; it's just that no one makes them any more. I hope someone paid a good price for that; the bronze casting work looked superb. (my late father was a metallurgist specializing in repairing antique equipment at the end. He made bronze power plant parts.) The bronze alone is a good whack now, and a new one would cost a mint.
