I have a cheap ass 55 lb anvil mounted to a stump..buried about 2 ft in the ground .sounded like a church bell .. used 2 tubes of silicon caulk spread out under my anvil very generously..tighten it down with four long lag bolts to the stump .Quietened down to a dull thump.. Been using it for 2+ yrs now....quietly with no chains, or magnets...Made the method up!!! Working for me.

Was the stump sunk into the ground as well? Because that definitely helps. Also, silicone between the anvil & base works great at deadening noise as well as eliminating lost energy from anvil movement while forging.

What a chain does is cut the sharpest note from the ring which most people find the most annoying. This is great for a demo when you don't want to annoy your neighbours but want the volume to advertise your presence.

Now, would this work if you cut a hole in a stump to set the anvil in ?

Interesting your resonance vibrations are transferred to your stand and then onto your tools hanging off it. The transfer works so well due to how tighly the anvil is held by your toe clamps.
Much like having a chain wrapped around. Same principle. chain soaks up vibrations via direct contact. Tools soak up vibration via the tight stand.
I think that your all violently agreeing but unable to see how similar both approaches are.

Good, effective suggestions -- I always wear custom ear plugs, but I also have neighbors :-) I mated my anvil to its stand with U-bolts, and that worked well. I also used 1/8" lead sheet as a gasket; it had an added effect, conformed over time and got even better. (Measured using a decibel meter.) If you have time on your hands, a small ball peen hammer, and a dB meter (or phone app) you can find the nodes and anti-nodes for most effective magnet placement. Clyde

Didn't know about the magnets but I got the toes locked in tight and even my neighbors were amazed at how quiet my anvil is!
