Here's my interpretation of this amazing song-
The video starts off with this text stating Jen is an AI, basically a robot, right? So the guy comes to the table, and switches her on, and she does the things she's required to do. In the dress choosing scene, we can see that even though Jen is an AI, she has her own choices, and tries to tell the guy about it(she wanted to wear a different dress) but the guy doesn't really pay attention to it, and just asks her to wear the dress he brought. As the video continues, Jen seems to start having stronger opinions, and not liking the fact that her every action was controlled(the dancing, and the fact that she does exactly what he does) At this point, a different girl enters, who seems to not have as strong opinions like Jen, and bends to the guy's will. And the guy, realising this, stops paying much attention to Jen as a whole, but still continues expecting her to be under his control. But Jen tries to break away, and she succeeds, bringing herself and the other girl out of his control. This 'coming out of chains' was for the video, but the lyrics hold much more meaning. (Check the description box for lyrics) In the first stanza, Jen says that all she wanted was to fit in with the guy, and yet no matter how much she changed herself for him, he still continuously tells her that she was different, and wrong, even though she's been saying exactly what he's been saying. She expresses her disappointment here, and then goes on to say she is done with him being such a horrible person, and that she didn't need him/his approval. She just realizes that changing herself for someone else was unnecessary, and ridiculous (how did I ever let you alter who I am) and that she now was no longer going to pretend to be someone she wasn't, especially when the guy has no idea what it's like to be her, and that he wouldn't be able to even stand up straight- he'd just be falling to his knees.
This is only my interpretation, so cut me some slack. If you read it all the way, amazing, I love you ❤️ No matter what, this song slaps, and I love it. The lyrics and visuals just make it a whole lot better. Hope there are going to be more songs like this:))
