I think I may have made a big mistake buying my cheap V8 Jaguar S-Type. With almost a month off the road, already thousands of pounds spent, this was not the result I was hoping for...

I haven't watched a more padded video on Youtube for some while and still not concluded!!!! Have more of Katie if you want longer videos!

Basically, if your fiancée likes the car and wants to get married in it, you have no choice but to save it and make memories in it. Do the right thing, it’s only money!

from my experience finding a trust-worthy mechanic is probably more important than which car you get, it's probably best for you to find 'the one ' and stick with them, especially for a car youtube channel. Anyway best of luck with Jag I've been following you since the 7 series and I love your content.

Joel, I've just looked at your MoT results online, honestly it's not bad, most is fairly minor. The rust can be fixed and not at stupid cost. Stick with it, you will have a great car.

Can't say I feel sorry for you mate as you haven't even tried getting your hands dirty. I run bangers aswell but I do all my own work. I'm not saying start welding panels but at least start learning to turn a spanner.

A better response from the garage would have been “we are confident it wouldn’t be a result of the work we did, but by all means pop back when you can and we will give it a quick check over, it’s possible this is a simple quick fix”

Now retired but I had a Jag repair and sales garage for fifty years and customer was king, if anyone was unhappy with anything I just asked them to pop the car back and we'd have a look together and sort out any problem they felt they had.We had families that were Grandparents then their sons or daughters then the grandkids all bring their cars to me and touchingly when I retired aged 65 some of the customers came along to say thank you and goodbye and were in tears so I think we got it right and were never short of customers throughout the hard times the garage trade went through.Stick with the jag and you'll soon find who the good and bad garages are .Best wishes.😊

hi Joel, my advice would be to have a look yourself at the issues, invest some money into some tools and a decent jack with axel stands. I’m 20 years old and owned a 21 year old astra for 3 years which needed everything replacing at some point as i did 80, 000 miles in that car. I used youtube and a few mechanical friends and saved so much money doing work myself on the car. i’d buy parts from a car distribution centre and fit them myself. I ripped my exhaust off and fixed that, replaced all the rear suspension, changed brake lines and calipers and serviced the car each year by myself. i never trust garages to not rip me off. hopefully it all works out for you mate, best of luck👍🏼

I'm very surprised the garage took that attitude after spending so much with them. Its almost as if they don't want repeat custom !
If the rust is cut out and welding done well the car can be further rustproofed to prolong its life. Certainly a car worth saving

hi Joel
Dont worry! I think a lot of people get more from your videos than you imagine. I like your honesty, humility and openess with your struggles in life. Dont give up, keep a sense of humor, and trust that one day it will all work out for the best!

It's a bit of a saga this, isn't it? Young man buys car with problems; expects garage to spend time to advise and mentor him for free; whinges about minor problems like a knocking exhaust instead of getting underneath and sorting it out for himself. Yawn. Get a grip, Joel.

Joel, last may I bought a car I always wanted 2018 VW Golf GTD. I wanted one for years and this one came up local so I bought it. First drive the eml came on (later rectified with a new exhaust control valve £265). I went to open the bonnet one day and boom catch failed (£261 bill). Was driving the car and put on the aircon it stopped working (£126 bill initially to find out where leak was and then finding out the condenser was had a hole in it - would have been £750 to sort). I ended up sinking a £1000 into the car over the 3 months I had it. Every week there was a new issue. After 3 months I traded it in to a car buying service for £11700. The car was £14500. £3800 lost including the additional things I did to it. Nobody wanted to buy it as I only had it 3 months. I was happy with £11700 to get it out my life. Sometimes things aren’t meant to be and like you I feel like I picked up a not so good one. It’s a lottery with used cars and obviously mine was 19 years newer than yours. Onwards and upwards sir

Headlights are anywhere from 40 to 70 second hand on eBay. My advice would be try and do the small repairs like the headlights yourself and then for the rust go to a restoration specialist. It’s a win win as the easier jobs will save you a few quid and you can also make more content on the car doing the easy repairs and then leave the intensive repairs to the specialists. Good video 👍🏻

I seem to remember you saying at the beginning of the journey that it was the cheapest v8 s type in the country, I may be wrong, if so it is owed a bit of work on it. You're also saving on the hire of a wedding car and you'll remember the photos of goldie with much more fondness.
I must say the attitude of garages down south stinks a bit, you don't get that here up in the lakes. Good luck though, good journalism, well done.

Looking at the list of failures and advisories, many of these could have or can be done by yourself at home with very basic tools and knowledge saving you the high labour costs of a garage. Plus, this would have the added bonus of creating great content for your channel and giving yourself a huge sense of achievement

It's a very tricky one Joel. I think we all end in that position at some point in our lives when it comes to cars - unless you're buying brand new and flipping them once their warranty has or is about to expire. What makes it all the more difficult is the emotional attachment one can form to the car, and that thought of "OK, once this is done that's hopefully it for a good long time"

The exhaust knock will just be a hanger - £5 and 10 minutes of your time and you'd be able to sort - as for the tracking that almost certainly will be down to the suspension work. Did the garage advise that you would need the tracking redone after? If not i'd be asking them to sort.

Blimey, you love a visit to Wendover Garden Centre don’t you! I had a Jag XFR and discovered that there is an important distinction between being able to afford to buy a Jag, and being able to afford to buy and maintain one. Shopped it in for a Honda Jazz! Keep up the good work.

I had a good look at the MOT history. It all comes down to the rust, everything else represents reasonably normal running costs for something this age. There is something else to consider. Things like the headlight adjustment are probably simple diy fixes but a commercial garage cannot risk wasting time repairing parts so a new part is always their option. To run a luxury car of this age at reasonable cost you need to at least consider trying some basic diy or finding a friend who can help.

As for the rust. Spray it with rust remover, then coat it with a generous coating of copperslip grease. That will stop it dead. You may need to repeat the process a few times until the grease bites into the rust.
