A little tip for using music while you’re talking…whatever frequency your voice is at, use eq to dip that frequency down in the music. It’s not a substitute for using less sparse music but it does give you a bit more apparent loudness in the music. 😉

I always leave my Ozone mastering on my stems, if you re-assemble them and adjust for the level they are hard to distinguish from the full mastered stereo mix. I throw all my stem elements into track folders as my DAW can export all folders with just a few clicks, so you can just set it running, go grab a coffee and all the stems are done when you get back. Huge time saver.

That's a really insightful video, Jon, beautifully presented. I'm just a hobbyist, so never written any music for library. But I learnt a whole lot here (and who knows, maybe it's an option I can explore in the future)! Based on the quality of this video, I imagine your subscriber count is going to rocket soon.

I hate it when clients ask for stems, but after listening to this, I am more at peace with it. Peace 😊

I've found all of your videos to be encouraging and helpful - and this one is at the top of that list for being both technically useful and a bit of a boost to get me working harder on making the most of music. I've always believed in stems, but you added a couple of extra dimensions to the concept. Many thanks!

Great advice, thx, Jon - especially the idea of separating the low and melodic piano parts 🙂

Another great video and great advice. You’re really kind to help potential competitors. That’s just the guy you are. Thanks.

I'm curious how you mentally separate "artist" tracks from "library" tracks. Do you always know, when you sit down, which you're going to create? Do you have pieces that start as one and end up another? Do you have tracks you consider as both and have released as such? That's a lot of questions! Thanks for what you do, good sir.

I always thought stems are everything separated and buses/groups are more of everything of the same type organized together. Like drums, bass, synths, fxs, vocals and then perhaps have the guitar, piano and stuff that has a lot of melodic content in them separately.
