Based on a true story, the film tells the story of Alfred Breillac, a white doctor, and his black partner, Vivian Thomas, who broke racial boundaries and worked together to pioneer heart surgery. Dr. Blaylock, who is both ambitious and discriminating in his career, discovers Thomas's talent for medicine and begins to teach him about it. First experimenting with dogs, Tomas quickly mastered the theory and practice of surgery. Together they conquered tetralogy of Fallot (also known as cyanotic babies), but he did not publicize Thomas' contribution to this. He chose to remain silent when Thomas suffered injustices because of the color of his skin. The two men, master and servant, mentor and friend, maintained a delicate friendship for thirty-four years.
