Musical performances today tend to be confined to particular times and places - mainly concert halls and opera houses - and are given for paying audiences. Yet in earlier centuries, music played a very different role, in that it was not always accessible to all. Musicians, and in particular composers, were generally maintained by wealthy patrons, and their duty was to provide music on demand, according to the client's pleasure: the client frequently requested music for special events, and the premiere took place according to the occasion.
To better appreciate this richly colored and vibrant score, one must somehow "visualize" the event: Handel, leading some fifty musicians, aboard a barge escorting King George I's barge up the Thames from Whitehall to Chelsea to the sound of the Suite in F (or "horn suite").
The wide popular success of this work is well justified. "It is largely in the tradition of English instrumental music. The slow movements are indeed imbued with Purcellian tenderness, while the dance movements show a predilection for virtuoso rhythm and ornamentation. The most obvious qualities of this score lie in the frankness of the themes, which are easily memorized, and in the beauties of the rich and varied instrumentation... " .
