THE CORE BELIEFS OF ISLAM: WHAT MUSLIMS BELIEVE
There are essentially six key beliefs in Islam. The first belief—known as Tawhid, is that Muslims believe in one-incomparable God (Allah). Say, “He is God, the One. God, to Whom the creatures turn for their needs. He begets not, nor was He begotten, and there is none like Him.” (Quran, 112:1-4).
The second belief is the Quran, which is the Word of Allah. Quran, 15:9, “Indeed, we have sent down the Quran, and surely We will guard it (from corruption).” Muslims believe that the Quran is the final revelation of Allah which is made up of 114 suras (chapters) and 6,616 verses (ayas). Muslims also believe that Allah revealed himself in the Torah (tawrat), the Psalms (Zabur), and in the Gospels of Jesus (Injils).
The third belief in Islam is the Prophets. From the start of Adam, Abraham, Moses, all the way to Jesus—Muslims embrace these men as prophets sent by Allah. The last and final prophet is Muhammad. Quran, 33:40, “Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but he is the Messenger of God and the last of the prophets...”
The fourth belief is in good and bad angels. Muslims believe angels were created by Allah to worship him, but some choose to rebel against him and cause harm to Muslims. It is believed that it was the angel Gabriel who brought down the Quran to Muhammad.
The fifth belief in Islamic teaching is fate or the predestination of Allah (Al-Qadar). There are different interpretations of this belief, but essentially, Muslims believe that Allah has given them a form of free will, but it is Allah who ultimately decides the fate of everything in the world. He does whatever pleases him. That’s why Muslims often say, “If it is Allah’s will.”
The sixth and final belief in Islam is the final judgment. Muslims look to that final day of resurrection. They will either enter heaven or be sent to hell.
