1 - Listen to the whole song before eying or compressing it!
It’s tempting to dive right in, but if you take the time to critically listen, you’ll fully understand what the track needs & be able to do the best job possible. Sometimes I even write down notes when I’m listening.

2 - touching Use reference tracks.
Pulling up a professionally mastered song or asking your client for a reference track can really help you with setting the loudness, balancing the lows & highs, & also giving your ears somewhat of a pallet cleanse. By no means is this considered copying or biting. It’s just a good “reference.

3 - Use a LUFS meter.
This is the standard meter for measuring loudness in our industry. It does the best job at considering the perceived loudness, as well as the overall loudness.

4 - Listen for & remove resonance frequencies.
Believe it or not, we can actually achieve a more polished & brighter record by removing the bad stuff 1st. Usually - with mastering - you only need to reduce by a dB or two. Mastering is all about subtle changes & balances that will yield big results.

5 - Use soft clippers & saturation to enhance perceived loudness.
Perceived loudness (& perceived dynamics) is one of the key ways to achieve a loud enough master while still keeping the integrity of the dynamics & quality of the original mix without squashing or destroying it.
