This Bible study devotional covers Philippians 2:1-13. In this passage, we read that Jesus humbled himself for the sake of others. Instead of grabbing for power, he lowers himself to serve. His followers have the privilege to follow his example and fight division with unity that comes from humility.

As always, we are committed to showing you how to see the good news of the Gospel in every passage of Scripture. In Philippians 2:1-13, we see that Jesus became like us so that he could invite us into unity with God. His way of humility leads to his exaltation and our joy.

Presented by David Bowden

This devotional was created by the Spoken Gospel Theology Team. The original draft was written by Aaron Addison. Research assistance, theological, and editorial support was provided by David Bowden, Christine Kazar and Seth Stewart. Copy-edits were made by Carol Madison. And all of this is made possible because of generous readers and supporters like you.

To say that Philippians 2:5-6 is Paul reminding them that Jesus is equal to God himself is to totally misunderstand what the Greek is saying there.

"Mind this in you which is also in Anointed Yéshua, who, existing in divine form [literally "in form of a deity"], did not consider the equality to a deity as something to be seized [as if from lacking, or clinging to by privilege]; rather, he emptied himself, having taken a slave’s form, becoming in likeness of human beings."

Once you stop forcing your theology into the Bible and let it speak for itself, you can actually start learning the truth of what the Bible says.
