Putin touts new Oreshnik missiles, challenges US to a 'duel'

Russian President Vladimir Putin taunted the US Thursday by challenging America’s military to a “duel” to see if its defense systems could stop the Kremlin’s new hypersonic ballistic missile.

During his end-of-the-year conference, Putin mocked the West’s claims that the new Oreshnik missile, capable of carrying a nuclear payload, was not as deadly as Moscow claims following its limited use against Ukraine.

The Russian leader then suggested the US pick a target to protect and see if its defense systems would be up to the task of stopping the Oreshnik.

I don’t doubt they upgraded weapons. But given how they been against Ukraine and how there tanks are I don’t think they are there. They are still powerful, but now I question the tech. Of coarse these days as we have seen it doesn’t take much to arm a scooter and drones.

These weapons are medium range ICBMs with targetting warheads. Typical ICBMs don't have to be super accurate, they just have to deposit high explosive warheads in the arial vicinity of the target. Of course, for Russia to use such a weapon would be highly provacative, as it would require the use of a nuclear payload which would have unintended consequences. So targetting warheads are used in place of a nuclear payload. This allows the warheads to be super accurate, so they can be equipted with conventional kenetic payloads and still have a reasonable expectation of destroying their target. Furthermore it's almost impossible to shoot these warheads down. They are being deployed by a large missile in space almost directly above the target. You'd have to empty an entire AA salvo in hopes of getting lucky enough to hit even one of the warheads. Russian is simply maintaining it's stategic artillery advantage now that Ukraine has deployed long range ATACMS. Ukraine has no ability to deploy similar weapons, and if any such weapon were to be deployed against Russia from a NATO country, Russia would respond immediately with a massive strike on Europe, targetting all known military and logistics infrastructure. They would have no way of knowing if such a missile directed at them would be holding a nuclear payload, and so they would likely respond with nuclear payloads of their own. Russia will always be able to maintain the strategic advantage in this war. Russia has vital strategic interests in Eastern Ukraine. The NATO does not.

I spend most of the year in Russia with family, unfortunately the country is nowhere near up to date like the West. A lot of Russians want to leave and move to US. Just check immigration stats if you dont believe it. A lot even try to enter illegally through Mexico border, thats how desperate theyve become

so they can barely deal with decades old ATACMS at this point i just brush off what putin says, we may be late to the hypersonic game but here in the US we got the talent the only thing that gets in the way is greed and beaucracy, , in partnership with Israel i'm not too worried. If putin was this technologically advanced he wouldn't have beggged North Korea for troops and the Ukraine war would have been over long ago.
