I hate it when filmmakers say this

I’m not going to say who this is about, but just to clarify, it’s not a youtuber. I don’t know of any YouTubers who shoot exclusively on Arri and most YouTubers have done good for the filmmaking community so I wouldn’t be so keen to criticise

honestly, i dropped out but this is why film school is a valuable asset.

agnes vardas 'the gleaners and i' was shot on a minidv handycam, and tells a beautiful story with little to no budget for camera work.

Exactly!!! That’s why we love you, cause you show that. Not just tell

Gear matters.
Your story matters more.

That’s it. Fight me.

To be honest, I'll get crap for this, but I get really tired of people saying "gear doesn't matter" period. It absolutely does. A more appropriate statement people need to adopt is "skill and practice matter most". Which is kind of obvious, and most people understand that.

Reminds me of rich people who always say "money doesn't solve anything". When in reality, money is what pays rent, bills, and gives your mind ease and a sense of peace impossible without it. What you do with your personal life is something else, and of course money won't solve that.

Gear 10000% matters, because at the end of the day I'm not going to enjoy a film shot on a smartphone in any serious sense. Everyone's different, but most people will watch that and know it's not up to standard no matter how skilled you are at lighting/framing. Anyone saying otherwise is playing dumb or lying. But people dismiss this to say "well it doesn't matter how nice your camera is if you don't know how to use it" and like...duh? most people aren't going out to buy a $20, 000 camera if they don't know how to use it, so it's a bit of a distraction from the real argument.

Point is, learn to use gear, practice with what you have, but everyone and their mom knows you will never make it to certain levels of any profession without a next step in higher quality equipment. Which means equipment is very necessary, but only after you're ready for it.

It’s the filmmaker equivalent of “Money doesn’t buy you happiness.”

May be true, but it buys a lot of less UN happiness!

They don't just shoot with the expensive stuff, they go on doing gear review after gear review... Then 14 months later, another "gear doesn't matter video.."

I agree! Same thing happens with music. I feel like an old curmudgeon sometimes wanting to point it out in peoples works, but usually some people tend to say gear doesnt matter and their actions dont really seem in line with that thought.

it's always so frustrating when people say shit like "oh you can just shoot on iPhone these days, you have no excuses" as if everyone could afford an iPhone or get treated seriously with just a phone.

It's similar to why i hate Film Riot. They do videos on "How to make a budget shortfilm" yet use thousands of dollars worth of kit.

It typically comes off as either false humility or a brag on their own skill set. Let them eat cake sort of thing

Maybe it’s better to say “it’s not JUST about the gear” I have old gear and old lights and use a 15 year old cheap umbrella cause it’s fast to use. Yet when push comes to shove I’m renting an arri and a vintage lens kit. Plus a grip truck. Though. I’m investing in learning story and the language of camera movements and the art. Not the gear. Appreciate your videos. Long time viewer.

I was making a short film for class. We were filming in another student's apartment. It was a nice two bedroom apartment with security in the lobby and it was right on campus. It was paid for by her parents and loans. The same for her expensive camera she was using to film. "Gear doesn't matter" she told me without a care in the world. Meanwhile, I was struggling to find a job, had no student loans, and was paying my own way through school and rent, all while not having even a basic DSLR.

Gear matters but it’s not all that matters

My first camera was a Panasonic FZ7. It took videos in 480p and I loved it so much. And I dreamt of better things. This is the tool that I used to make my first video. Today I use the Sony FX30. Gear does matter.

they are saying just because you can't afford a tractor doesn't mean you can't use a shovel while not denying a tractor is much better

How can anyone be so dense as to say that for an entire art formed around getting machines to create something you want, that the machine you use doesn't matter?
