How Helicopters Land In Dangerous Situations

Landing a helicopter on a moving object is already a task in itself, but what happens when the forces of nature or man made issues make those landings even more risk worthy. In this episode of Xplained we take a look at some of the most dangerous situations faced by pilots when landing a helicopter.

Short story some of you might enjoy. I was a CH 47 Chinook Pilot in the military. On my third flight in the CH-47 I made a comment about how the helicopter is a slow brick in the sky not as agile as the little 58. My instructor pilot looked at me and said he has the controls. Next thing I know we’re at Treetop level at about 120 kn doing almost map of the earth along a river. One second I’m looking out my left window and seeing the ground and the next and looking at the stars. When it was done I thought I was going to have to pull the seat cushion out of my fifth point. Most of the time the Chinook is a slow flying workhorse. But in a moments notice that bird can really move.

Definitely a fun experience I went to an air show when I was younger and my dad paid for a helicopter ride for me and the 2nd time I rode in a helicopter was when was in a motorcycle accident and had to be airlifted to the hospital I remember just floating sure would love to get a chance to go Again in this life time

Nice video. I have flown in an helicopter twice and the experience was wao. All I looked at was how the pilot uses most of the bottens to operate the helicopter.

Damn! Another Vietnam Story ...I worked for the American Armed Forces Entertainment Group, The USO.
I travelled the length & breadth of South Vietnan on a daily basis, flying in both the Huey & the Chinook, & C130's & C123's, once in a South Vietnamese Douglas DC3, entertaining the troops.
From Mountain Top Fire Bases to the Delta regions, to close to the DMZ, and anywhere we were welcome.
But the most spectacular flight was with 'The 1st. Cav' air wing, these blokes were complete with Handle Bar Moustache's & Yellow Cravats & Ist. Cavalry Hats, right out of th 1850;s ...
we flew in Bell UH-1 Iroquois at tree top height for the entire 45-minute journey for fear of Snipers!
This Australian Entertainment Group were 'In Country' for 18 months.

Helicopters and planes are some of the safest vehicles on the planet not only because of the rigorous training involved to fly one but also because of the copious amounts of maintenance involved.

Wife and I took a helicopter tour of Kauai about 8-10 years ago. Was an awesome, beautiful trip. They even hovered down inside a small volcanic crater above the Na Pali coast. It was raining and we were told it pretty much always rains way up there.

I was blessed to obtain my PP license during college, and then my dad, having his own construction company, gained access to sell and represent McCullough Gyrocopters. It was the only FAA certified gyro at that time. At their expense, I was able to travel to their factory in Lake Havasu, AZ, and get certified to fly the gyrocopter. I had an old Vietnam pilot training me, and we would chase the wild donkeys that roamed the desert outside of Lake Havasu. BTW, McCullough was the chainsaw guy that bought the barren land where Lake Havasu is located, and paid for and built the main structure [roads, water, sewer, buildings, etc] of the city known today. He also bought the London Bridge and moved it there and re-built it over the Colorado River, We did a complete loop in this bird, and this technique had not been done before. We took a long cross country to another state, landed in a field, hopped a ferry across the river to a casino, had lunch and gambled, all on one trip. This was in the early 1970's. Lots of fun flying the J-2 Gyrocopter. We even sold a few.

I remember not thinking much of it as i got on a helicopter for the first time it was until my cousin asked the pilot how he got a big scar across his face to which he replied helicopter crash. It was in that monent I realized we were heading straight into a mountain before he pulled up last second and proceeded to show off crazy maneuvers boy i tell you that’s about as close as ive ever been to crapping my pants 😂

I flew myself a chopper over Miami beach and it was amazing experience I've ever had

As a UK Mountain Rescue Search & Rescue dog handler, many years ago, the dog and I took part in a training exercise to familiarise us both to being in the chopper and being winched to the ground. What a fantastic experience for us both. Always, after that, my dog would immediately perk up whenever she heard a chopper, even on the TV!

I have been working on helicopters for a long time. I fly on maintenance flights very often. I love the machines. The do things airplanes can’t.
They must be respected by everyone involved with them.
Most of the crashes I know of were during training.

Autorotation is a procedure the pilot performs rather than a system. The pilot lowers the collective, which reduces the angle of attack, and increases rotor rpms. When the rpms are high enough, the pilot pulls up on the collective and creats lift and slowing the rate of decent. Depending on altitude, this will be done 2 or 3 times before reaching the ground. I was a helicopter crewchief in the army and have been in them many times doing autos.
