To erect a stone, people dug a large hole with a sloping side. The back of the hole was lined with a row of wooden stakes. The stone was then moved into position and hauled upright using plant fibre ropes and probably a wooden A-frame. Hundreds of people were involved pulling the stones, some from as far as Wales. It is likely that like the Egyptians, they made extensive use of rivers to ship these stones, while others were sourced from nearby.
Physicist Freddy Hoyle has published a paper on the use of the henge as an eclipse predictor, but evidence suggests that the erection of the large stones occured later.
