An Asian elephant is a large, majestic mammal native to the forests and grasslands of South and Southeast Asia. It is slightly smaller than its African counterpart, with a rounded back and a more compact body. The elephant's skin is gray and slightly wrinkled, often with patches of depigmented skin, especially on the ears and trunk. The trunk is a versatile tool, used for breathing, grasping objects, and making sounds. Unlike African elephants, Asian elephants have smaller ears, which are shaped somewhat like the Indian subcontinent.

Asian elephants have a domed head with two prominent bumps, and their tusks, which are usually smaller than those of African elephants, are present in males and are often absent or rudimentary in females. Their legs are thick and sturdy, supporting their massive bodies, which can weigh up to 11,000 pounds (5,000 kg). These elephants are highly social animals, living in matriarchal herds, and are known for their intelligence, strong family bonds, and long memories.

Their diet consists primarily of grasses, but they also eat bark, roots, leaves, and fruits. Asian elephants are often associated with cultural and religious significance in many Asian cultures, symbolizing wisdom, strength, and loyalty. Despite their cultural importance, they are an endangered species due to habitat loss, human-elephant conflict, and poaching.
