1964 Fairlane 500 First Start in 24 Years Part 2

Well, we left off in episode 1 with the car firing up after close to a 1/4 century hibernation but not running in tip top shape to be honest. In this episode I go about rebuilding the gummed up Holley Carburetor. However, even after fully pulling the carb apart, cleaning it and installing fresh parts... the ol girl just didn't want to function. This is not the first carb I've rebuilt and with base settings that should at least allow the car to idle by itself... there was no sign of it working. So off it came again just to make sure i wasn't losing my mind or overseeing something, and on went the old crusty Holley from the 65 Mustang... and sure enough, it ran perfect. So like i mentioned at the end of the video, even though you went through the process of rebuilding something or bought something that is "rebuilt" doesn't always mean that its going to function correctly or to 100% of its original capabilities. There's clearly something wrong with the carb that I cant see/ fix. If anyone has any ideas feel free to make a comment.

That is my dream car. There's was a connection with my dad and I with those cars. Every time he would see an old Fairlane a smile would appear across his face. It's something to have a emotional feel inside over a car. But we shared the same passion for those car. Thank you for sharing this video. I lost my dad suddenly from cancer two years ago. But as I watched the video and listened to that 289 rumbling in that she'd I could see my dad sitting there behind the wheel smiling.

Looks like the blue 64 I had, same tail lights, stick 6 cyl. I swapped n a 1968 302 2V Auto out of a wrecked Fairlane, had 69 Torino rally wheels on it and a factory dual exhaust system that a parts guy at a Ford dealer found me....Loved that car!

Me and my best buddy restored a Ford Fairlane -61 500 full size 302cid at middle -90's. Everything, engine, chassis, brakes, suspension, interior, electricity. That was fun. Greetings from Finland.

Yup, I've run across flattened o-rings and other seals when tearing things down. Heck, even piston-rings can get stuck or lose tension! (usually stuck) Ah, I'd bet a tiny fleck of rubber from that deteriorated needle/seat o-ring got into a passage. If you or a buddy has access to machining of parts you could get a piece of round-bar to fit in the carb throat, put in a couple of o-ring grooves with a space between (enough to cover the ports) where an air-outlet hole (that connects to a larger hole drilled half-way through the center of the bar) can blast shop-air backwards through the passages from the fitting screwed into the end of the round-bar. Hope that makes sense. Man, I love the rear lights on the Fairlane!

289's are awesome little engines. They just won't die.

Keep up the great work. I recently was looking at building a thermoquad carb and purchased the rebuild kit but chose to buy a rebuilt unit. I can do everything on a car...the carb is daunting to me. Thanks for sharing.

Wish my gaskets would come off that easy. But that carb is much newer than my 34 year old Holley.

A great carb rebuild tutorial. I like your organizational skills.

Actually if that sat with fuel in it or even the remnants for that long it wasn't too but. You try not doing anything for that long and we will see how you look. Keep 'em coming! Great car

Your idle circuit is clogged and you may or may not be able to fix it. So soak it in some Tyme or some Berryman Chem dip professional carb cleaner over night and blow the idle passage out with air wash off with hot water. Lastly blow the idle circuit out with a can of carb cleaner. The passage is very small and comes out under the butter fly its only a small hole. It has to be clear. It starts in the float bowl.

If my mustang ever needs repair, I'm coming to you guys. With as fast as you guys work, it will be fixed in no time. LOL And with a little creative body work, that Fairlane will be looking more like a classic mustang.

I lived the 289 years, they were awesome engines. The 4 BBL were pretty sweet.

This here is the reason I prefer Edelbrock (Carter) carbs. Sure, you leave a couple of hp on the table but they are so much simpler to rebuild and tune in my opinion.

when doin old cars ya should check the compression, an out of ajustment valve lifter can cause a lot of head aches

Run a straight edge across the base plate, make sure it's flat. Also check the throttle shafts for play, the bores can become out of round causing a vacuum leak. Holly used to make a repair kit to fix the shaft problem.
