Mass and Weight
Mass
- Mass of a body is the quantity of matter (or material) contained in it.
- It is a scalar quantity which has only magnitude but no direction.
- SI unit is kg.
- The mass of a body is constant and does not change from place to place.
- The mass of a body cannot be zero.

Weight
- The weight of a body is the force with which it is attracted towards the centre of the earth.
F = GMm

- By Newton’s second law of motion,
Force = mass x acceleration
Force = m x g
- By definition, weight = m x g

- S.I. unit of weight is Newton (N).
- Weight is a vector quantity.
- The weight of a body acts in vertically downward direction.
- Weight depends on g therefore, weight of a body is not constant. .
