What sold me on this filter was an episode Bryan did where he combined this filter at sunset with a model flashed with a green gel... gorgeous effect and it's straight out of camera. Now, don't get me wrong... I enjoy monkeying around and working in PS or LR as much as the next guy... but to start with a base image so beautifully makes work in post even more fun and rewarding.

If you find the filter unnecessary because you would rather apply the effect in post, that's great! We do not want you to buy anything that you would consider a waste of your hard-earned $. Save it for something you really need (and when you're ready, we're here for ya).

The White Balance setting is applied AFTER the sensor. So you can lose data just trying to get the colors you want. The filter allows you to get the colors BEFORE the sensor so you get more of the data the way you want it before you start messing with it.

The thing is you can do this in "post" in camera. You don't need the (hard to get hold of) filter.

The FLW is designed to correct florescent light to daylight. By switching the white balance to florescent instead of daylight the effect will be similar and you just saved around $30-40 and shipping.

I love Bryan's techniques. Very simple but very effective and his videos are short and to the point, great work.

I looked up this filter on Ebay. 77mm FLW from Adorama (Ebay) $65.45...very reasonable, postage to Australia $105.52!!!! What the....are you guys buying an airline seat for this filter.

How about you lower your postage prices, you might sell more of these overseas. I can get other filters from other US vendors for around $10-$20 postage why can't Adorama get a better deal from the freight companies.

FYI: While we do hope you will choose us when you are ready to buy gear, we do not tell Bryan (or any of our other presenters except for our product reviewers) what gear to mention or use in their videos. They really, truly only talk about the stuff they bought for themselves, use, and are enthusiastic about.

Fortunately, we do.

Gavin Hoey's AdoramaTV series, Take and Make Great Photographs, offers tutorials that dive deep into a variety of post-processing techniques including altering the overall color balance. Go to the AdoramaTV YouTube channel (see above, right below the video) to start exploring and learning!

The "official" purpose of an FLW filter is to correct for the color frequency limitations of fluorescent light sources. Obviously, Bryan has found a more creative purpose for his! Yes, Cokin makes FLW filters and Adorama carries them. Go to Adorama(dot)com and search for "Cokin FLW" and you will find a bunch of 'em.

I miss his long crazy hair.
I've been following Bryan since Understanding Exposure.
Just bought my 28-135 Canon from Adorama, now time to pick up FLW filter because I love the results from what I've seen.

Thanks for sharing.

I will buy it right now, but please tell adorama not to raise the price after this video :)

great as always

This is easy to accomplish in post. I'd only use the FLW filter in combination with a flash+CTG (green) gel to give you a neutral white balance on the parts of the image that are lit, with the dramatic magenta shift on the background.

Always followed Bryan master of the craft . After watching this I indeed tried to find it elsewhere as I’m in UK . Couldn’t get it as Adorama don’t ship here for some reason so had to shop elsewhere in the USA .. paid a lot for a filter and shipping and tax but I have a feeling I’m going to enjoy shooting the Thames in London at night now ..
Thanks Bryan

As ever, a great video tip from Bryan and Adorama. I'm not completely sold on the FLW (no explanation of the letters in the video) as a creative tool, that couldn't be replicated via photoshop or lightroom, for example. I guess I will have to go research the filter online to see whats so unique about it, more.

Hi, does this work for normal portraits? Does it affect the skin tones of your subject? Thanks in advance for your reply. And thanks for the awesome tips. I have just ordered one. I am always looking for small things that can make a difference to my photos.
