Sir Keir Starmer is considering non-cash options in response to Commonwealth nations’ calls for reparations, which could total up to £18 trillion.

While the Prime Minister has ruled out financial reparations, he is open to alternatives like debt relief, public health support, and educational programmes for Commonwealth nations.

The Prime Minister ruled out issuing a fresh apology, noting that an apology for the slave trade has already been made. However, he said the importance of acknowledging the past, stating, "We can’t change our history, but we should certainly talk about it."

Peter Cardwell speaks with Senior Adviser at Policy Exchange, Rakib Ehsan.

If Starmer agrees to reparations, the UK taxpayers should agree to not pay taxes. This should be the absolute line-in-the-sand.

It seems like he has money to spend everywhere else, but not in the UK, and on everyone else, but not on Brits.

When these people were slaves their housing was supplied their food and clothing was supplied. when they were liberated the owners charged them rent for their houses and paid a pittance for them to buy food and clothes. All they got from freedom was to join the rest of us who are financial slaves. Be realistic.

We struggle to build a healthy GDP as we have incompetent governments who give away our money to the rest of the world. If Starmer capitulates to paying these foreign grifters, life here in the UK is going to be far worse than it already is.

How about thankyou Britain for leading the abolition of this barbaric trade and thankyou for funding the modernization and education of our ungrateful countries... I think they owe us

‘No’, pure and simple!
No money, but by all means an apology, providing it is fully understood that it comes with no admission of responsibility. So often an apology is seen as an admission of guilt, which leads on to a court case, which usually means compensation. To keep it simple, probably better to say nothing!
Starmer found himself obliged to make a stand here, as to have accepted that the UK should pay substantial compensation, a flood gate would have been opened, and the ‘Working Man ‘ would have revolted en masse. He’d have been out before Christmas!

Black people can sue UK in UK courts for slavery crime. There is no time limit in UK laws for crimes commited in the past.

Im so sorry that many people in the past were enslaved as a result of their OWN tribal leaders in Africa and Arab states selling them off to slave traders. I do not feel at all responsible for what happened.

18 trillion, a conservative estimate.

Pay reparations out of the Royal Purse and sale of Royal Assets - they made the money, not the people!

If the cown on throne wants to pay it he should give up his throne and wealth to pay it not tax payers or the british people for something that is in the past. We stopped it but its still going on today by the same people who started it
