Joe Biden inauguration: New president sworn in as Trump snubs event

A new day, a new era. President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris have been sworn into office, pledging to write a new chapter in America's story and declaring "at this hour, democracy has prevailed".

The theme of this day was all about unity, although the man who had done so much to shatter it was conspicuous by his absence. Donald Trump shunning the ceremony, a sore loser to the end.

Millions of his supporters will be looking for a new political home. And America will now be run by one party - in charge of Congress and the White House.

Faith and pride in America fully restored! Never again shall I take for granted our democratic constitutional republic, that which has been a beacon to so many, the world over. While there may have existed continuity before in other countries, I believe it is America's that has been most resilient, and steady, and has guided more nations to strive for such a goal. While America has faults, and has made errors, I do believe that world would be in bigger disarray without it.
