Dionysios Lavrangas: Seguidilla-Intermezzo - Athens Philharmonia Orchestra

The Athens Philharmonia Orchestra commemorates the 200 years of Greek Liberty by honoring Greek creators. In a series of recorded concerts, the orchestra presents an anthology of Greek music, featuring the historical course of Greek music creation during the 200 years of Modern Greece. Andreas Nezeritis (Patras 1897 – Athens 1980) was one of the greatest Greek composers of the 20th century in the field of symphonic music. The piece Ballet Music for String Orchestra was composed in Athens in 1940. It is defined by its neoclassical idiom and consists of 6 parts: Introduction in G major, Gavotte in D major, Menuetto in B minor, Siciliana in G major, Sarabanda in E minor, Gigue in G major. The work was first performed in 1942 in Athens by the Athens Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Theodoros Vavagiannis. Not only it was frequently performed in Greece (Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras), but it was also presented internationally: in Moscow in 1955 by the Soviet Radio Orchestra, under the direction of the distinguished conductor Nikolai Anosov, in the USA, and in Israel by the Haifa Symphony Orchestra.
Two small orchestral works by Dionysios Lavragas were discovered by chance in a misplaced folder in 1994. Their titles resemble melodramatic standards, such as the Seguidille in Bizet's Carmen and the Romaniesca in Spyros Samaras' La Martire. The same folder contained other pieces by Lavragas, works by Konstantinos Sfakianakis, Antiochos Evaggelatos, and other Greek composers, as well as the entirety of George Axiotis' orchestral works. The Seguidilla, composed at the end of his long career (the score indicates the place and time of composition: Argostoli, 17 August - September 1937), demonstrates his mastery of the music form and orchestration. The work impresses with its laconic approach to time and its modest use of expressive means (Byron Fidetzis).
