How did the Motorcycle helmets we have today evolve? Did you know that the Isle of Man TT pioneered the use of safety equipment? Why are there different types of helmets?

Great video as always! Couple of things to consider.
1. Studies have shows that the material they make the helmet from can be beneficial in different impacts. For example the polycarbonate shells have more flex and do a better job at mitigating lower force impacts.
2. Rotational impacts are barely understood, but what the most up to date research is finding is they cause more harmful brain energies. DOT and Snell do not account for these. Only FIM and ECE 22.06 are starting to consider them into their testing criteria.

You know it’s a good video when it’s 5 minute info video but you feel like you just finished helmet college

Even today in 2020 after all those years of helmet evolution and so many deaths of motorcycle riders I can't understand why people don't wear helmet.
Great job on this video Mike.
Safe Rides always with helmet and safety gear.

Carbon fibre is much more rigid than glass fibre, and lighter. Both plastics (thermosetting polymers) benefit from their bonding resin, usually epoxy, being by and large chemically inert. The only real factor for it is ultraviolet light, which causes the resin to chemically decompose over time. That's why it is a good idea to store your helmet in a bag somewhere dark and ones with a nice coat of paint over the resin will probably last longer. I have a well over 20 years old open Shoei glass fibre helmet here that I am not at all afraid to still wear for slower speeds. The shock absorbing foam probably became stiffer over the years, but I have all faith in the shell still being as strong as on day one.
Thermoplastics like ABS and polycarbonate are very strong, although usually heavier. They emit softeners which has them ageing, they get more rigid and their strength decreases over time. Those plastics can be really good for helmets, they just don't last that long. Protecting them from UV light and storing them cool keeps them usable for longer as the softeners evaporate more slowly.

Why is the spoiler removed on your AGV Pista? Did you have a fall on it?

Something new too look for is the MIPS system. I believe alot of helmets will have MIPS or a similar system soon.

It would be interesting to get your thoughts on helmet aerodynamics. Specifically with naked bikes like the Streetfighter.

Mike why are you mentioning Snell M2005 standards when it has been revised and improved dramatically since then up to the current M2020 standard? The newest Snell standard does use varying headform weights during impact testing. ECE is just about to release a 22-06 homolgation to correct some errors with their testing as well.
I agree no one system is perfect though.

Thanks for the awesome content Mike!! I spent a bunch of money and 2 new helmets last month so it's good to know my money went to a good place ;-)

My son asked, me which should I get the full face or the half? the full face is more expensive and I don't have a lot of money. My reply; How much do you value your face or your brain for that matter? save up and get the best you can afford...

You forgot to mention the 1/4 or 1/8th helmet. I see people wearing them to bypass helmet requirement laws. It's like a dome shaped hockey Puck that people strap to their heads.

It’s a decent video with nice visuals. However, I disagree on the shell material. Polycarbonate is just as good as any other material for impact safety. My source is SHARP where you’ll see 5 star helmets with all shell types. Carbon fibre is just lighter than fiberglass or poly.

SHARP had the best test regime until the recently enacted ECE 22.06 because SHARP tested at 3 speeds and do a rotational test (friction test). ECE 22.06 takes the best of SHARP and adds rotational force tests. However, it’s still a pass/fail certification. SHARP will continue doing star ratings which buyers can relate to more.

SNELL used to be good but they’re out dated with their tests and don’t test rotational forces.

My helmet of choice is a Bell Race Star which got 5 stars on SHARP tests. It performs very well in all 3 impact speed tests and just so so for rotational management.
