Come to Fraserburgh/ Aberdeen. I call the accent the hillbillies of Scotland accent. You'll understand so little of it you'll want to leave!

A few years ago, my wife and I and another couple went to the World Stone Skimming Competition on Easdale.
The male friend has a fairly strong Texas accent so I made sure we rode the Port Appin ferry because I know the pilot and he has a fairly strong Scottish accent and I wanted to hear a conversation between the two of them.
After the ferry ride, I asked my friend if he could understand the ferry pilot and he answered, ” I could understand about half of it”
The next year, when I was riding the ferry, I asked the ferry pilot if he could understand my friend. He said, ”I could understand about half of it.”
I wish I had recorded the conversation.
Two people speaking English and barely able to understand each other.

My Scottish accent is one of the things I love about being Scottish. That and my heart disease and diabetes. I drank too much irn-bru. And ate too much haggis.

Gaelic was outlawed by the English, personally I think Gaelic should be taught in schools in Scotland as it's fast becoming a dying language.

The borders twang is about the easiest to understand. Or the DMZ as we like to call it.

It certainly didnt have anything to do with Gaelic being banned by the English....😐

Scots and English are descended from olde English but with the union of the crowns the Scottish language was no longer the language spoken my the elites in Scotland. Sad.

God I wish I had the accent. I'm half Scottish and half American but I've lived in California and Nevada most of my life. I have a big disconnect with half my family.

Californian here; I was in Malibu visiting my mom and we started chatting with this young man and his accent was so thick I could not place it. He told me to guess and I said Norway! He started laughing and said “you really think I sound like I’m from Norway??” And I was like “well not anymore!” We had a good laugh about it and he then told me he was from Scotland. But my California ears did not believe that English was his first language because his accent was so thick. 😅

When I was in the army we had two Scottish instructors who said Scotsmen are often chosen to be radio operator, for their clear English. Not a joke.

As the product of Scottish Private schools and a Swiss finishing school, I am frequently told that I am incredibly easy to understand. However, even I must concede that I really do not sound remotely Scottish.

I have noticed that the accent in the Inverness area has a great degree of clarity. Certainly far preferable to some of the "thicker" English dialects.

I know my generation are better at English written grammar because of our comprehensive education system. I often have to correct my 10-15 yr younger English team mates. They actually ask me to proof read presentations and other formal client docs. 😂
