How to play cricket: The Basics

preview_player
Показать описание
These are the very basics of cricket explained utilizing footage filmed at the Annual Formosa Cup Cricket Tournament, held in Chiayi City, Taiwan on the 1st and 2nd of October 2011.
~ Cricket is supposed to be played on a grass oval, but Taiwan is a baseball playing nation so, in order to play the game of cricket in Taiwan, we had to think up a way to play the game we know and love on a baseball diamond.
~ Despite this obstacle, have a look at the many cricket tournaments that have been played here in Taiwan since 1999... a testament to the mindset that "if it's to be, it's up to me"!

I’ve tried to watch “how to cricket” videos a number of times over the years and this is the first time it has made a lick of sense to me. Now I want to play... haha

If anyone wants to read a story, then here's how I fell in love with cricket:
I stumbled upon the NZ national anthem today. The cricket world cup 2016 version (I am 13 years old). I remembered that it was the first time I saw cricket. Only one match made me fall in love with it. While hundreds of football matches failed. The only reason I saw cricket was because of New Zealand. I remember the day. I asked my grandfather what are you watching. He said it's cricket. A game like football. Sri Lanka and India are playing. He added that Bangladesh, our country also plays cricket. I was happy to hear that, but then my grandmother said New Zealand also plays cricket. I was soooo happyyyy that I said from today I'll support New Zealand. I found my favourite country. I didn't expect this because I didn't find New Zealand in football. I have been following NZ since I was 2. No one knows from where I heard about NZ though. I found more maths and therefore enjoyed it. It is a long game and a very time consuming one. I remember making two misconceptions; runs are given based on how far the ball was hit and I forgot the other one. Cricket became a huge part of my life. I only watched 2 NZ matches and it was enough to change everything. New Zealand was on top of the league table. I told my father to look NZ is on top and Bangladesh is in the bottom. He said I am lying. Then he looked up and couldn't believe his eyes. Everyone thought I'm lucky for New Zealand. This was also the first time I learned how to spell New Zealand. The women's world cup was also going on and I loved it. I couldn't see NZ there because I saw only the final and NZ wasn't there. I was surprised by seeing a girl help another girl when she got hurt. I thought they were enemies. I would watch whole matches of every team with my grandfather and my grandmother in our old TV. I simply loved it and decided to become a cricketer. But that decision didn't last long. Now I want to be an Astronaut. But I wish I could be a cricketer so badly. Anyway, NZ went to the semi final. The match was against England. I had exams so no one let me watch the match. My grandfather kept telling me what is happening. Guess what NZ lost. I couldn't stop crying. The next day was my Geography exam and I was very bad at geography back then. I was in the first grade; I only used to study before exam day for family reasons. I remember I forgot to learn unseen (a part of every subject in our school) and I wrote nonsense in exam. Back to cricket, I thought NZ lost because I didn't watch it. I started hating England since then. No words can explain how sad it was for me. Then it was the final; England vs West Indies. I was supporting West Indies, of course. On the same day was the women's world cup final. West Indies won the Women's world cup. And they also won the men's one. The women's one was in morning in another country, while the men's one was in evening in New Zealand. The time is Bangladesh standard time. The girls were so happy they came to the field when the others won. Two world cups in one day to same country. I was very very excited for the 2019 cricket world cup coming up. I wrote it all over Papa's wardrobe. I thought about revenge against England. Unfortunately I got separated from cricket for 3 years until 2019 because Mamoni was worried about me being effected too much by it. So, 2019 came. Now I don't want to go there. I really don't. The final was New Zealand vs England. And I'll never forget the words "by the barest of margins, England win the world cup by the barest of margins". It was unfair. Everyone knows that. It was the first super over in history. It was the worst final ever. Everyone hates that. See the official video comments to understand what happened. NZ deserved it. After this I didn't miss a single match.

Great explanation! Much better than that "How cast" video

This is a much better video than most cricket basics videos, because you explain and show the rules in action instead of just listing numbers and rules and then usually complaining about how long test matches are like many other channels videos. TYVM

This is a really great video. Growing up in America, I never understood Cricket. I was able to pick up bits and pieces of it, but this really helped explain the scoring and outs for me. I feel like there's still a lot to learn, though (:

This was very helpful. I have never understood this sport so I never could relate and had the wrong attitude toward it. I strongly believe that everyone should explore new things so we can better understand other cultures. I think this way of thinking can only bring people together. Great video and thanks for opening my eyes to a new sport.

Glad you liked the video Michael. There are a few different formats (length of play) for cricket, ranging from 20 overs to 50 overs, as well as 5-day test cricket.
Each set of 6 balls bowled (pitched) by one bowler is called an "over". So, if 2 teams are playing a 20-over game, then the limited number of balls for that game is 20x6=120 balls... "legal" balls! A bowler must bowl 6 "legal" balls in his over. Say he bowls 1 bad ball, then he must bowl that one again, so then his over had 7 balls.

Unfortunately, we don't see a lot of this here in America.  I know that Lacrosse is catching on, but I don't get into that much.  I love Aussie football and now am really getting into Cricket!  Don't get me wrong, I would always choose going to an NFL game or an MLB game, but if given a chance, I would definitely take in a game!  Thanks for explaining the rules.  This is the first REAL explanation I have found.  Now I can enjoy a game on ESPN and know what is going on!

Thanks for posting this video. I struggled to understand the game of cricket for over 15 years with no qualms. Now living in a country (SA) that  follow cricket like religion awaken my interest with poor understanding of what is all about. After watching this video I quite agree cricket is cool and fun to play.

I fell like if I was taught to play cricket using baseball terms, I would understand it a lot better!

This is what I understood if one was using baseball terminology:
Bowled= struck out.
Caught= pop fly out.
Stumped= drop 3rd strike, touch batter for the K.
Run out= caught stealing
LBW= hit batter, but awarded an out instead of a base.

I've played softball for about 10+ years so I am a huge baseball fan, nonetheless, cricket seems like a really fun sport to play. With so many similarities to baseball.
