In the lower right corner of the timeline is a magnifying glass the plus and minus buttons next to it will contract/expand the timeline.

Very useful trick, it is one thing that annoys me with all editing software, so I will definitely try this tip out next time! Thanks Scott

Those are volume envelopes. You can adjust the line (the small boxes on the line are keyframes) according to what volume level you want. I use a mouse to do this, but you can also use as USB control surface (a mixer with motorized sliders) to perform this task as well.

Vegas is a great option if you are editing on a PC (Premiere Pro is the other). Which editor is "better" is pretty subjective. I've always liked Vegas.

What you have to remember about Vegas is that no-one in the industry uses it, but nor do they use FCP X, knowing HOW TO EDIT is more important than knowing software. Remember you can edit with anything provided it lets you move video and audio around, it's just that some things save you time and effort by having much more efficient tools and workflows, I like Vegas because it does everything I need it to and because I run windows, what you get depends on what you need and can run.

I'm using Pro 10 and it does like to crash sometimes. I just get in the habit of saving manually. For me, it's not a problem enough to leave Vegas, which I'm pretty used to.

cool! do you know if one can search a clip in the timeline by file name? would be very useful when having tons of different clips/files in the editing section. thanks

How stable is Vegas for you? I preferred editing on Vegas but the constant crashing and laggy playback caused me to switch to Premiere. I'm not so fond of using Premiere though. So I'm wondering how the experience is for you and how you go about your workflow?
