Mesa Verde National Park is an American national park located in southwestern Colorado. It was established in 1906 to preserve notable prehistoric cliff dwellings. With more than 5,000 sites, including 600 cliff dwellings, it is the largest archaeological preserve in the United States.

The site is home to numerous ruins of villages and its built by the Ancient Pueblo peoples, sometimes called the Anasazi. They lived in the dwellings from about 600 to 1300 AD. However, the sites was abandoned around 1300 AD but the reasons why remain unclear. Some researchers though it is likely that the migration from the area was due to either drought or lack of resources.

The most famous Mesa Verde dwelling is the Cliff Palace. Dating back more than 700 years, the dwelling is constructed of sandstone, wooden beams, and mortar. Many of the rooms were brightly painted and thought to be the largest cliff dwelling in North America. Mesa Verde National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
