There will never be another Paul Newman. He should have won the Oscar for The Verdict

The amazing David Mamet wrote this remarkable screenplay; directed by Sidney Lumet. The performances of the entire cast are nothing short of breathtaking.

Bruce Willis is sitting behind Paul Newman's right shoulder in this scene. His first - ever on screen appearance.

In case anyone is curious, you can see a young Bruce Willis in the background as an extra

Paul Newman had the bad luck of going against Ben Kingsley for Ghandi.

I can see Newman “performing” here. It’s Mamet, it’s Lumet, and yes Newman and cast want to be real… but they try too hard. I’m not saying I can do better with all of the cameras, extras, and artistic desire. His acting and others’ would’ve worked better for a play. Film is different.

One of the more powerful, poignant and moving films you'll ever see. If you've never viewed this work, you should do yourself a favor and do so. You'll walk away, stunned at the performances and the writing and the gift of Paul Newman. As a surgeon, I wish I could tell you that the events depicted herein couldn't happen. That would be a lie. I could regale you with hours of incompetence and subterfuge mirroring these events, occurrence after occurrence, a number of which resulted in the death of the patient (a number of whom were babies.) Very sad. Pax.
