My Classically-trained White mother never took R&B seriously until I came home with a Roberta Flack record in the early '70s ("First Take"), then became a huge fan. She could appreciate the styling and expert breath control Roberta exerted in her singing from her years of voice training. "Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway" (1972) was her favorite!
