Edge Of Tomorrow's Alternate Ending Was Even More Confusing

The 2014 sci-fi blockbuster "Edge of Tomorrow" was a visual feast. Starring Tom Cruise as William Cage, a reluctant and inexperienced U.S. Army Major who finds himself trading blows with alien forces hell-bent on taking Earth, the flick blends time-travel shenanigans, mech warfare, and invading aliens to shockingly fun results. Much of the film is spent watching Cage slowly but surely gain the upper hand thanks to his newfound time-looping power — and it's this very ability that contributed to an ending that had some viewers seeing red.

While the film's closing moments were undeniably optimistic, some fans left the theater confused, feeling that the movie's conclusion didn't exactly mesh with its otherwise gritty themes. And, wouldn't you know it: At one point in time, the folks who made the movie felt the same way. It turns out that "Edge Of Tomorrow" had an alternate ending that was even more confusing!

Seen it at least 20 times by now... And no, the ending is perfect. I don't need ALL my heroes dying in every film. It's nice to have a good ending from time to time.

When the team went in for the last time, none of them expected to be reanimated in another time loop. They went in knowing they were likely going to die, even Cage, but they did so anyways. I think the movie gives us the weight of that sacrifice and then as a reward, brings them all back. Ending, perfect.

I liked the ending as it was in the movie. His little laugh when meeting Rita for the 'first' time was brilliant.

I loved that ending. It was completely unique. Literally no one knew he was a hero and had saved the earth. It’s the perfect character arch for that character who started being all about himself and his own promotion.

I’m a huge movie fan. This film is by far one of the most under rated films I’ve ever experienced. Saw it close to 10 time and still not tired. Epic plot, epic performance, the ending is marvelous.

That is why I admire Tom Cruise so much; he understands the business so well, and that brutal ending (which, in the comic, is even better) would have done more harm than good to the film as a whole. What it seems that nobody understands is Cage's personality: a totally egocentric and selfish person who loves recognition and the lights on him. Sacrificing being considered the savior of humanity, which without a doubt he is, is the biggest sacrifice he can make, and the best of all, he is deeply in love with a woman who doesn't even remember him. What more do they want?

The ending is I think what makes this a cult classic. It's a full circle conclusion. One of the few films, along with any Bourne film I can easily watch just to enjoy a few hours escapism.

I loved the ending...it was almost more depressing knowing you basically went thru a 1000 iterations, sacrificed yourself and no one knows. It's a great twist that the only one who would believe him is the woman he fell in love with.
I think the ending made you think about the movie more after it was over.

I love the ending. He loves Emily Blunt's character and is thrilled to learn that she is still alive. But when he approaches her, she's like "Who the f**k are you?!" and we get the Tom Cruise smile. He has to start all over in their relationship. Beautiful ending.

"all you need is kill" is one of those books that stayed in my head for a long time. The ending just kept repeating over and over. After hearing about the edge of tomorrow being an adaptation I was really sceptical to watch it. Loved the movie and surprisingly preferred the ending they played in theaters. The book was super heavy and a weight had been lifted after I accepted the ending from the movie. It was just a nice touch. (Also thinking Emily blunt going to die the whole movie was stressful lol)

I loved the ending. The way Rita still treated him with an attitude when she sees him despite him actually being a uniformed officer this time was cute and him laughing about it was basically how we all felt about it, so it was great.

I genuinely prefer the happier ending, because the alternate ending sets the series up for a never ending series of sequels. I understand there is a prequel in the works, and I'd forgive it if we get to see Rita's ark, (and if it stars Emilia Clarke), but I'd hate to see it turn into another Terminator franchise. This ending wraps it up. The war is over, the aliens lost, there is no more to say. Killing an alpha and having the squad destroyed as they're approaching the louvre ends the arc of these characters but leaves the war ongoing, most demanding endless sequels. Nope. In this case, I actually prefer the happy ending, because it's an ending.

I love the ending, IMO it's the best among the 'Groundhog Day' genre. Massive character development for the protagonist, all the lovable characters do their best and get their due rewards even if they don't know it later. They could mess it up just to be contrarian. Here we get complete satisfaction instead. It's not cheap, it's just right.

This is one of a few Sci-Fi action films, like T2 and Aliens, that has very-high replay value. And like those 2 classics, the ending as it is provides the best theatrical value.

It's about time I watch this gem again.

This was a perfect movie. Story, cast, VFX... and ending.
A rare thing in Hollywood.

Cage went into that last battle KNOWING he would die and he DID sacrifice himself. He didn't know he would be coming back after the grenades were dropped by him. He is Legendary to the fans but not to the Characters in the film and he never would have been. I do see him engaging with the Rita character and explaining everything to her eventually and getting one small personal recognition from her and perhaps the other guy who knew about the reset as well. It ended perfectly in my mind and I have seen these many times and always feels right. I think a sequel would be fine....perhaps a 2nd wave lands on Earth... but we are too franchise happy in America.. let the story stand.

The look he gave her at the end made the movie for me. The genuine joy in his eyes as he realizes he can now make a life with this woman was true acting.

This is literally my favorite movie of all time. I've probably seen it dozens of times at this point. The fact they survive is beautiful and redemptive.

One of the most underrated action films of ALL time. Editing, storytelling and directing were elite.
