'It just wasn't Scotland' - Kris Boyd reflects on Germany's 5-1 Euro 2024 opening win

Former Scotland striker Kris Boyd labelled his country's performance "embarrassing" after their 5-1 hammering at the hands of Germany in the Euro 2024 curtain raiser.

Scotland were always up against it against the European Championship hosts, who came into the tournament on the back of friendly wins over France and the Netherlands.

Even so, lax defending and poor ball retention saw Steve Clarke's side 2-0 down inside 20 minutes, with a third netted before the break from a Kai Havertz penalty once Ryan Porteous had been sent off for a rash challenge on Ilkay Gungodan.

There's no question that we can still qualify from the group, but Clarke has to be bolder with his tactics. That last night was cowardly, there's no other way of saying it. We do have the players to win games. I don't know what would be a better a result for us today, a Hungary win, a Swiss win, or a draw. Really? I’ve been watching Scotland for nearly 50 years and I would say that was EXACTLY like Scotland !!! That couldn’t have been more ‘Scotland’ if every player was wearing a See You Jimmy hat and was eating a haggis supper! I was laughing during the week at the build and folk getting so OTT about us maybe even beating Germany and you just knew it was going to be the same old story.
