The city of Trabzon was once part of the Byzantine empire. After the Ottoman conquest of the Byzantines in 1453 AD, Trabzon survived as a splinter kingdom of the Byzantine Empire. In this sense, the Empire of Trabzon was the successor state to the Byzantine Empire like the Byzantine Empire was the successor state to the Roman Empire. This Byzantine kingdom remained independent from Ottoman rule until 1461 when the Ottomans came and conquered them. Despite this, not all of the Trabzon Empire's territories were conquered by the Ottomans. Their Crimean territory remained independent and the Byzantine principality of Theodoro was formed. However, the Ottomans on their quest for Byzantine conquest invaded Crimea and conquered the last remaining free Byzantine splinter state.

Therefore, whilst the Byzantine Empire was formerly conquered by the Ottomans in 1453, splinter states of the Byzantines remained independent for another generation. Trabzon was the capitol of the Byzantine resistance following Ottoman conquest.
