Good for you! It is hard to put yourself first when it sounds so reasonable to just pull through. And it sounds similar to my last job experience - super exhausting and the wrong thing but I learnt so much about myself!

I've come across some stats that a surprising percentage of law school graduates are unemployed or underemployed, so it's no longer the go-to job for success. I did a year of graduate work in entomology (study of insects) before quitting and doing a Master's in French. My reasons were the same as yours. I wasn't passionate about entomology even though it was my childhood dream. The reality of the field was not what I had expected. I also wasn't very good at science. I was deeply unhappy and unmotivated. I'm glad I changed programs even if a PhD in French doesn't seem very practical. I love what I'm doing now. Thank you for making this video. A lot of young people watching are probably unsure about their future. They think they're failures because they don't know what they want to do. It's OK to try things and quit. It's OK to take a gap year to figure things out. I don't regret my one year excursion in the world of science. It taught me a lot about myself.

This makes sense. Law school was something I thought about for like 10 seconds (did a B.A. in History so similar to English, people said to me maybe law school is a good next step). I did a similar year of discovery, but as part of AmeriCorps, which helped me realize I did not want to go into museum work/curating/etc. I'm almost done with my MLIS degree now & I've loved the experience, so definitely feeling passionate about the material/what my degree & field stands for in the community is going to decide how your grad school experience goes.

I slogged through law school and am now taking the bar for the second time. It's definitely not a place for everyone - despite finishing (somehow...) the amount of times I cried and felt completely overwhelmed were kind of alarming. Definitely something to really think about before committing - agree with you on the do it for a year, after the second semester you really have an idea of whether you can/should do it for whatever reasons you see as important. Tho I have to say, I heard 2L and 3L year get easier as a 1L as well...yea those people lied...

It’s funny to watch this because law is undergrad here in Ireland. My undergrad was fairly chill but I feel I was really lucky that I liked Law because it turned out to be quite different than what I expected. I obviously like it though or I wouldn’t be doing an LLM. Really interesting to hear how your experience was though.

I had the same issues with medical school. I'm so much happier in my grad school program. But also super excited to finish and start my career.

If there is a transcript of this video, I could really just copy the whole thing, find "law" and replace with "business", and that would be my exact experience. I was pressured to pursue an MBA now that I have a few years of work experience. But I decided to study what I really love, philosophy, and I am starting my full-time studies in January!

Btw, what is the name of the 15- second music piece starting 0:42, sounds pretty nice.

Love this series. ..Coincidentally (1) I voted for Doug Jones !!🍾🍾🎉🎉🎊🎊
(2) I was encouraged to go to law school by a grad school prof who actually got applications for me...it was a great fit for me although I was so naïve 24 years ago.
