Leica BLK 360 | Is it for the Film Industry?

The Leica BLK 360 is a new compact and user friendly LIDAR scanner. It combines 360 photography and laser data to rapidly create a 3D point cloud of the real world.

That point cloud can be used to generate an infinite amount of measurements and it can be turned into a 3D model for Cine Design and game engines, virtual reality, or augmented reality.

In this video I breakdown the basics of LIDAR tech and demo scanning my studio with the Leica BLK 360 and Autodesk ReCap Pro Mobile. We take 5 different scans and register (combine) them in real time using an Apple iPad Pro.

We then import the LIDAR scans into ReCap Pro on the desktop and generate an accurately scaled floor plan and a few elevation views. We finish up by creating a 3D model and looking at it in Cinema 4D with Redshift (GPU Rendering) and Cine Designer (Film Industry Previs Plugin).

I am personally very happy with the data from the Leica BLK 360 both for point cloud uses and for creating low to medium resolution 3D models for previs.

I plan on purchasing a BLK 360 and use it with my Photogrammetry workflow to capture real world locations.

Cheers,

Matt

Architects would kill for this functionality the way it's integrated with Autodesk products!! :o

Thanks for the demo Matt.
We have been using lidar scanning in the film industry for visual effects for a very long time.
This Leica scanner is great, so easy to use and very fast as well.

great content! i think LIDAR will become standard in film and tv as its invaluable for the FX side of the industry.

It needs a lot of AI to autonomously model objects based on LIDAR and photo data. For example, if AI can determine something is a wall, it would vastly streamline the 3D model conversion from the point cloud. Cleanup of the model would cost less time with the user just confirming or preserving details lost during streamlining.

HAHA the photography set w/ a stuff animal 🤣🤣 so good! and WOW that thing is tiny for what it is. Once I did a 360 shoot of my friend standing still as a statue and he then turned it into a point cloud and then printed action figures of himself with a 3D printer - it was awesome! The Leica BLK 360 would have been perfect for that!!

I have been talking about this tech for the past 6 years. I am glad that the price of this tech is coming down a alot.

I just see the VFX implications of this- this is like 10x better than using just an HDR

We've been using lidar in the film industry regularity since the Marix, but for the most part this is through our vendors and not often done in pre-production as we're still in the bidding stage. You make a good case for prioritizing it sooner though, or investing in one as a production company or studio.

It's very usefull for archeology and science, but can totaly be use for movie sfx or video game, attached to a drone can be very usefull too, but People can also have access to satellite data base.
