People seeking to rent a home in Ireland are increasingly desperate due to an acute shortage of rental properties.

A leading property website states there are just over 700 rental properties available for a population of more than 5 million people.

My dad was a landlord but got out of it because he said it was just impossible here in Ireland. He rents out a small place in Manchester and says it’s infinitely better in the UK

When we're all living in communal pods eating crickets they will still find a way to screw us for more.

When I was renting in Dublin my rent cost almost the same as my parents mortgage repayments. I was 1/4 renters in the one property 😅

Ireland has open borders and has taken in close to 60, 000 so called Ukrainian refugees, hotels are full of Somalia and Arabs and Ukrainians, properties are being earmarked for immigrants only and our government has said it will not put a cap on Ukrainian refugees, yet it is "Far right" to even suggest that with the housing crisis we should stop the flow of immigrants, there are hotels in Ukraine that are still open for business and are taking bookings to this day as the conflict is confined to a small area far away from these areas, why can't they house their own ?? We are full and cannot afford any more Africans or Arabs or any sob story from wherever they come.

And yet govt planning on bringing rental caps in England which is already driving many small landlords out. Mortgage costs keep going up so do taxes hence if rents are capped, it will be disaster unless there's sufficient social housing which we already know there isn't anywhere near!

Is already happening here even in England and there is no rent control landlord has just sold out due to loss of energy took the pandemic and non-paying tenants unless they have an alternative to rental property I don't think control would be the answer

I also looked for months, and in the end I had to quit my job, abandon everything good opportunity coming my way, and leave the country just to not be homeless.

Tax = caused by the state
Rent control = caused by the state.
Notice the problem

A small investor in property never gets the same tax relief that a large corporation will. Thats not right. A small investor should be able to write off the same deductions as cuckoo funds. There really is no difference in the risk involved.

Yet no cap on Ukraine or other immigration.... Not rocket science

But in Ireland an average of a 1000 Ukrainians enter each day. The government have booked up all the hotels too. So even tourists are getting screwed

The extreme shortage of places to rent, screams that rentals are not the cash cow that the general public thinks it is. Now throw in more regulations, restrictions, moratoriums, etc... landlords will keep selling and developers will not build new. Bottom line is landlords need a return on their investment, or they cease being landlords. With property values doubling or more it make more sense to sell and earn one or two percent on the money.

If this is true I feel for all students in this position, awful. Shortage of houses hear all over UK. Pub chat dismisses these claims.

In January 2010 there were 26088 rental properties listed on Ireland's biggest property website. As of December 2023, that number is 1644..
I made a video of browsing the website back in 2010 to highlight the stark and frightening comparison..
