A useful morning at A B Garage in Harwarden sorting out a few issues with the O Series engine in the 1972 MGB GT.
Went down for a tune up but discovered that a few rattling noises were down to a rad hose clip catching the chassis rail, and that the crank pulley bolt was coming loose for some reason. Both now sorted and at idle so much quieter! Next thing, compared to the run in 2021 before I pulled the engine where it had made 80bhp at the rear wheels in 3rd (roughly 105bhp at the flywheel) it was now only pulling 70bhp 🙁 Adrian immediately asked whether the inlet system had changed. I had fitted the original plenum thinking that was going to be designed for the airflow and with a cold air feed should have been comparable to the ITG filters previously fitted. A run without the plenum chamber and back to 80bhp at the rear wheels! So, I need to rethink the inlet and either put the old ITG filters back on but in terms of looks for the age of the car I am thinking some old-fashioned ram pipe trumpets with gauze, albeit that might be a bit noisy! Otherwise, apart from running rich at higher rpm thanks to my inlet set-up, she's running quite sweetly and easily pulls well.
