A young woman (Stanley Timberlake) dumps her fiancée (Craig Fleming) and runs off with her sister's (Roy Timberlake) husband (Peter Kingsmill). They marry, settle in Baltimore, and Stanley ultimately drives Peter to drink and suicide. Stanley returns home to Richmond only to learn that her sister Roy and old flame Craig have fallen in love and plan to marry. The jealous and selfish Stanley attempts to win back Craig's affections, but her true character is revealed when, rather than take the rap herself, she attempts to pin a hit and run accident on the young black clerk (Parry Clay) who works in Craig's law office.

Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland were at the peak of popularity in 1942, but only Havilland deserves some positive credit Is this Our Life. The actress got the best part of the plot: the good girl protagonist and stands out for its beauty, elegance and grace, receiving praise during the filming of John Huston. That seems to be the only good memory saved by the director of Falcon Maltese, who considered this film a false step in his promising film career. Bette, who came from a succession of successes in roles of suffering heroines, conformed to be the antagonist and first received negative criticism from the public. Fans so far accepted the repulsive attitudes of some famous characters of the star, as in The Little Foxes, 1941 but repudiated the bad taste in the choice of hairstyle, makeup and costumes.
Negative criticism and slovenly appearance in Bette Is this Our Life hindered her choice to play the beautiful Charlotte Valley Now, Voyager. Bette was only chosen after Irene Dunne, Norma Shearer and Ginger Rogers refused the role.

oh, I love movies with Bette Davis and George Brent together! I always thought they were so good together! and looked so great together! he sort of reminds me of Clark Gable, but I think George Brent is a little more handsome😊 the two of them together reminds me of Rhett and Scarlett!☺

I love this film.."In This Our Life"...an often overlooked film among Bette's vast array of  films.  Bette is as mean a she can be in this film and I love it when she is mean and nasty...

The screen credits should have said "An introducing Ernest Anderson"< but he's not mentioned at all. OF course, this was 1942, which would explain his not being mentioned.

Bette's character Roy is so insufferable and disagreeable that one almost wishes to reach across the screen and slap Roy's face if one could.  Roy certainly meets her end karmically at the end.  over the top movie--that Bette hated--but I find very entertaiting.  Charles Cobernas the corrupt but likable family scion-- steals the whole move from everyone...no meen feat.
