Yagi strengthening into a major typhoon threat

The main story in today's tropics is the further development of Tropical Storm Yagi, which appears to be rapidly intensfying and is likely to reach typhoon status soon. The storm will continue to push west-northwestwards, threatening areas from Hong Kong round to Hainan island in China. With sustained rapid intensification, Yagi could reach Category 4 typhoon status in the next couple of days, and will weaken slightly before it reaches land. However, impacts are still expected to be severe.

Elsewhere, the Atlantic areas of interest persist, but are struggling to show any meaningful signs of development today. A storm or two is still possible, although a strong hurricane appears to be unlikely in the next week.

I'm an Aussie living in Dongfang on the south east coast of Hainan.
Looking forward to a nice cool change and a bit of rain, but not a full blown typhoon. Bin there done that!

Yagi might have the same intensity as Shanshan or Ampil. WPAC storms always peak at Cat 4 lately
