In this video I provide a definition and examples of classical conditioning in advertising. Classical conditioning is the process of using an established relationship between a stimulus and response to bring about the learning of the same response to a different stimulus. In this video we examine how our consumer behaviour can be influenced by classical conditioning. An example of classical conditioning being applied in a television advertisement using popular music is given. Other marketing communications and consumer behaviour examples are also provided.

Ivan Pavlov never used a 'bell'. He used a buzzer, metronome and ( unfortunately) electric shocks when working with his Lab dogs. Also he never used the term 'conditioned', he used 'conditional', Which, along with other translations from Russian to English, got lost in translation. The word conditional relates to whether the organism has the appropriate conditions, both in the environment and internal physio/psychological states for the behaviour to work. That is why some people are more prone to be (non-consciously) classical-conditioned, ' than others. Obviously, there are a plethora of other conditions to augment the conditioning ( e.g. personality type, non-conscious biases, experience, morality, social-conformity etc). I have found in psychology, that there are a multitude of explanations why a person does what s/he does. Psychology is definitely NOT an exact science.
