8:32pm 1/25/24 I lay in my bed watching and listening to this beautiful but sad song. I love songs that really tell a story fictional or true.

Run away Brandy, he’s in love with the Sea! At least he’s an honest man.
Love this song and remember it well, was just a little girl, great storytelling! 🥰

Watching this clip I got the impression that Elliott Lurie has a very cool demeanor. Later I watched an interview with him as an older man and that impression was confirmed as well as the fact that he is an exceptionally intelligent person.

Maybe the perfect pop song? Catchy tune, lyrics tell a earthy, believable, noble story, the singer has a such a warm baritone voice.

Yep, maybe a perfect pop song. A whole bunch of people must agree with me because it reached #1 on the Hot 100 chart the week of 8.26.1972 and stayed there for 16 weeks.

I asked Elliot Lurie about a month ago where was this recorded at this video and he responded back. This was live in 1972 on the TV show Rollin' on the River with Kenny Rodgers The first edition. Elliot Lurie is a really nice guy. I asked him on his YouTube channel.

The best part of this song is the backup singers. The sound, the rich harmony. No added tracks of the lead singers as they typically do today. This was an actual band that sing
