I get that this is a penalty by definition, but this is stupid and not what was intended when it became a rule. His stick is not helping him in the play whatsoever. Big deal if he's still holding it and didn't drop it yet, it didn't help him in any way. Now this game was tilted against LA due to a technicality. No sports fan wants to see a game shifted like this due to strict adherence to a rule.

The NHL needs to discipline these refs. I actually can't believe they missed the slashing penalty and assumed the stick magically broke in half by itself.

Not gonna lie as a ref for the last several years I didn’t take the rule this way. It states participating in the play with a broken stick. To me kicking it isn’t participating with the broken stick. Stupid way to interpret the rule in my opinion.

this needs to be changed to how the helmet rule is, if the player is still in the play they can kick it away, obvi not use the stick

Soon only lawyers will be able to play/watch hockey due to so many of rules being too specific and too police-state level of no fun.

To everyone saying it broke because it got slashed.

It broke at the flex point, a place where a lot of sticks will naturally break as that is the most stressed part of the stick. The “slash” as some of you seem to think it was(it wasn’t, by any reasonable definition), was roughly mid shaft. Almost a foot higher than where it broke. Heaven forbid you actually take a couple seconds to get a good look at what happened before spewing forth your bullshit. I bet you guys get in arguments online a lot
