Spangles (1926) 8mm raw scan

Показать описание
Gorgeous and talented, "Spangles" Delancy (Marian Nixon) rides bareback under the Big Top of 'Big Bill' Bowman (Hobart Bosworth). Spangles falls in love with Dick Hale (Pat O'Malley), a young fugitive from justice who uses Bowman's traveling circus as a hideout. Bowman, however, wants Spangles for himself. Featuring a colorful cast of carnies, a menagerie of exotic animals and a chariot race in Roman regalia, this circus melodrama is an excellent example of the terrific spectacle of the late-silent Hollywood movie.
IMDB lists the original runtime as 77 minutes across 6 reels. This version clocks in at 68 minutes.
There is no serial number or distributor branding present on any of my print's three reels.
This scan was completed in May - June 2022, with a Wolverine Pro at 2k, at 20 fps. You may find this speed appears too slow; If that's the case, playing the video at 1.25x speed should help out.
This file was rendered at UHD resolution, at 40 fps, in August 2023.
Physical cleanup completed in May 2022.
Very minimal digital cleanup attempted: Light sharpening, destretching and low-boosting.
When initially finished scanning the film on my consumer-grade equipment, I began video editing: Manually frame-correcting in Magix Vegas to fit the film into its original aspect ratio of 1.33 : 1. This proved to be a gargantuan task, too much for one hobbyist. I gave up on that, and instead, began a correspondence with Grapevine Video, later shipping my print to their HQ.
Linked below is another scan of the same print, performed by Grapevine Video. It will remain unlisted: It's from my print of the film, sure, but this scan was provided to me free of charge from Grapevine, an operating business that (at one point) entertained the idea of a DVD release of their scan. It sounds like that is no longer the case; Whenever a release does materialize, or I get word, I will private their scan.
For the sake of proliferation-- Multiple digital copies of a rare film is nothing short of miraculous-- Here it is for you to compare and contrast with my uncropped upload:
