Johnson's Brexit Protocol is British Law

Boris Johnson has, yet again, threatened to suspend the Northern Ireland Protocol. This would be a clear breach of international law, despite how it is reported in the media. But it is also a matter of domestic UK law and Boris Johnson could be taken to court if he does so. The course of justice could even quite rapidly order the Prime Minister to re-implement the protocol, and there would be no legal way of him avoiding doing so.

GB - A union where politicians want more freedom of movement for sausages than they do for people.

The "Sausage War" can be summarised thus: Britain negotiates trade deal, signs same into law, then tries to renege on the deal whilst attempting to blame the EU for a problem of the British government's making

Hands up if you think Putin's expat mates donating to the Conservatives affects policy!

Johnson looked completely out of his depth over the weekend, as well as not knowing how to actually swim alongside the grown ups. All that was missing was his water-wings.

Why does he keep finding solutions, agreeing to them, signing up to them and then complaining about them?. It's nuts. It's utter insanity.

Treasonous behaviour is acceptable to general public. As long as you wave the flag.

Pardon my ignorance but shouldn't 'legal expert' Starmer be holding Johnson's feet to the fire?

This is just the beginning. We are already falling behind in competitiveness and economically, how do you think it will go if we get sanctions because we can't keep our own agreements. We are a partner you can't trust, which makes for a horrible business partner to the international world.

I thought that headline should read:
“Village idiot gets into G7 Summit”

Johnson always wanted to be PM. He also wanted to "have been" PM, unfortunately there is a bit in the middle he was never cut out for.

Open-minded Northern Irish have to admit that their present situation is a BLESSING: they have the best of both UK and EU worlds, they can have 2 passports (IR or GB), they can travel everywhere in the EU or the UK, they can become Irish when they want, they can export their goods to the EU and to GB. In fact the problems comes from extremists ("Loyalists") who hate the GFA. Like Brexiters, they are older people obsessed with the now defunct 1920 empire.

A government that happily considers breaking it's own laws disqualifies itself by default. This would result in any self respecting electorate marching in the streets. Otherwise autocracy is where you're heading.

I watched (on YouTube) a Gresham College lecture from 7 years ago discussing the beginnings of the First World War. Part of the discussion was about the Germans breaching Belgian neutrality, which was guaranteed by international treaties signed when Belgium was established in 1830. He argued that breaching international law was something done by autocratic regimes, and in 1914 Germany, all ministers answered only to the Kaiser. The lecturer noted how the French military, who in mid-1914 hadn't yet adjusted their tactics to modern machine guns, were never-the-less strategically sound thinkers and so had prepared plans themselves to advance rapidly through Belgium if fighting a war against Germany. However, as the lecturer pointed out, France was a parliamentary state and so the French military's plan to breach Belgian neutrality was nixed by their political leadership that had to answer to their people through their parliament.
This was an old Englishman speaking in 2014. Who could have known his lesson on parliamentary government versus autocracy and the violation of international treaties would ring so loud in so few years?

The Brexiteers should look at Fishery to see how well Britain would fare in a Food based war.

Interesting, that in UK media, this is called the "Sausage War", whereas in the media of the EU countries it's called "a dispute about the rules for meat import". Seems like the tone is less belligerent on the continent 🤔

I'd love to observe the Johnson listening to a legal briefing on such a recondite matter. My guess is the eyes glaze over about five seconds in.
