Hello students, we are covering the Class 12 English summary in Nepali language for all the poems, one acts and short stories mentioned in our syllabus by NEB. This video is for the chapter “I Was My Own Route” which is a poem by Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos (February 17, 1914 – July 6, 1953). The poet is known for her service as Secretary General of the Daughters of Freedom and has played a crucial role for the advocacy of Puerto Rican independence. Further, she gained global recognition for being a civil rights activist for African/Afro-Caribbean writers.

The poem by Julia de Burgos presents the burdening of women with the patriarchal ideologies from the past. The poet urged all the women to come out of the past and locate their identity within. The idea of the poem is mainly based on the feminist ideas and stands against the social injustices. She demands for women to have equal rights and opportunities like the men have. She argues that the society has no right to determine the destiny or anything about her personal life. The poet doesn’t want to follow the guides established by the society of her time and has presented herself to be a rebellious character for gender equality.

1st stanza:
☆ she is against of male dominated society
☆she don't want to play hide and seek like other women and want to make her own identity

2nd stanza: In her route, she got many barrier but the determination to make her own identity is very strong so she won from those barrier and she is understanding how she following the rules made by male dominated society.

3rd stanza: speaker has very difficult to balance the life and her own route but she want to travel up to horizon and want to enjoy all the freedom that is enjoyed by male.

4th stanza: she dislike to be the shadow of male and lives according to them.

5th stanza: she knows herself more closely when she makes her own route and her life became self sufficent.

6th stanza:Here, she understand clearly that whqt she is and what the male want to make her .Repeating the words of 1st stanza she said she is happy to live with her decision

talks about male dominated society that how male put their rules on women and about gender discrimination.
