✅ Monteriggioni, Tuscany, Italy walking tour in 4k. October 2021.
Hello my friends!!! Welcome to Monteriggioni !!!, an incredible location in the Tuscany region.
Monteriggioni is a commune in the province of Siena in the Italian region of Tuscany. The town is architecturally and culturally significant;and is referenced in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. In recent years, Monteriggioni also plays a significant role in the games Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, both of which are loosely based around certain key historical events in Renaissance Italy.
In this video I will take you through this medieval castle / town, so well preserved that you will feel that you are walking in the past!.
Monteriggioni is one of the best preserved examples of military architecture in the world: the walls have a perimeter of 570 meters and were raised between 1212 and 1219. Monteriggioni was then along the Via Francigena, the important road that connected central northern Europe to Rome.
Throughout the town there are craft shops, restaurants with typical dishes (pappardelle, salami, Sienese wines) and houses in which, strange to believe, local people and not tourists still live.
Monteriggioni still has 14 intact towers that served as lookouts against the attackers and from which today you can admire a splendid view of the surrounding area. It is accessed from Piazza Roma. Opening hours vary according to the months. Ticket cost: € 1.50. Not far away is the Armor Museum, cost € 3.00. Walk on the walls + museum: € 3.50.
The Porta Franca or Romea, oriented towards Siena, which in the past was equipped with a gate that was lowered in case of danger and the Porta di San Giovanni, oriented towards Florence, which opens into the walls and is defended by one of the towers of the fortified perimeter.
The church of Santa Maria Assunta, in Romanesque and Gothic style, built in 1219 is composed of a beautiful polychrome facade in travertine and pietra serena, a portal with brick decorations and a bell tower dating back to the 18th century. Inside you can admire two 15th century tabernacles, the Madonna by Lippo Vanni, a wooden crucifix and the bell donated by the Republic of Siena in 1298.
