Things to know before visiting Santorini

Here are a few things to know before traveling to Santorini that I wish someone had told me before I traveled there. It’s always good to do some research before visiting a new place, hopefully these insights give you more of an idea of what to expect and how to plan your travel to Santorini.

Santorini is a volcanic island. To be more precise it is an active volcano!

Thousands of years ago the centre part of the island collapsed into the sea creating a unique open sea lagoon. The Caldera is the sea lagoon that has been created.

During the peak season (June – August) the prices all over Greece are higher, there are more people everywhere and finding hotels with views and availability is difficult. However, you will have warm Mediterranean weather and sunny days, also everything will be open for anything you want or need.

A visit to Santorini during the off season (Sept – February), the island is very quiet and you will feel like you are the only one there. Unfortunately many of the luxury resorts, travel companies and restaurants are closed at this time of year because of the small amount of tourists and the weather.

Another of the things to know before visiting Santorini is during the wintertime the island can get very cold, especially at night. We traveled to Santorini in October, and it was very difficult to find good food, accommodation and activities – but we managed, so don’t be disheartened if you are not able to visit during the warmer seasons. You will still have a great time even if it’s cold and quiet.

I have been to Santorini 28 times, 3 weeks every Year, so I feel quite comfortable there. I fully agree with many of Marcellos tips! (I do know how to pronounce both Oia and Imerovigli, but wouldn´t think of beeing rude and try 2 correct how others pronounce it...) Weather is usually typical mediterranean, but there might be variations in temperature! I have been there in June when it was 38C at day and 32C at night, but in Sept-Oct it´s getting colder - one day it was 38C and the next day only 17C! When it comes to authenticity, You have to travel around to the minor villages to meet it, but trust me: You CAN still find it! Rent some kind of vehicle and You get to see soo much more! A 4-wheeler can take You to every interesting spot on the Island, but I feel safer with a car! (Unfortunately it´s more difficult to find a parkingspace for a car during high.season though!) All in all, TNX for a nice video!

Would be nice if you can put names of places in your description. As I do not find the restaurant you are speaking of.

Beautiful background behind you! Travel is always cheaper at the end of the summer Travel months.

Sounds like a lot of walking instead of driving. Hmm interesting tourist idea for a honeymoon.

I wonder what the cost was for the entire trip with airfare?

Great video! Thanks for the tips. I think traveling during the fall is a great idea. My family and I recently returned from a 3 week European vacation where we boarded a cruise in the middle of our trip and toured the Greek Isles. Santorini was amazingly beautiful. I subbed to your channel and will look out for more of your videos. Keep in touch. Michelle :)

I have been there but it's good to know it is still an active volcano but currently dormant. A 1956 earthquake killed many of my fellow Greeks prior to it becoming a tourist trap I got a hotel below and I wanted to be close to Akrotiri.

Imerovigli. Pronunciation of Oia is ee-ah. Good places for sightseeing are Pyrgos, old Thira and Megalochori.

Oia (pronounced as ee-uh) is NOT the only location with blue domes, churches or windmills. There are only a few places closed in October. We just came back from Santorini last week. We had photos taken in Imerovigli and they had a perfect sea view with blue top churches in the photo

Is Santorini appropriate to take my 1 year old? Also, we plan on flying into Athens? We want to go to Santorini. How should I plan our hotel? All nights in Santorini? Or split our stay in Athens and Santorini. Sorry a bit worried. We’re going next month. If it’s too much for a toddler we may change our plans.
