What do lawyers really do? Lawyers are guided by and held to very strict rules. Rules of evidence, rules of professional conduct, and rules of procedure. Let's unpack those a little bit one by one.
On TV, you see lawyers testifying, entering into hearsay, talking to juries about things that are not relevant to their cases. None of that is permitted in the courts of law in the state of North Caroline or in Federal court. Courts are run and guided by very strict rules of procedure that all lawyers must follow.
Television follows no rules of procedure. Lawyers follow no rules of evidence. And in fact on television, lawyers engage in violations of rules of professional conduct all the time.
In fact, the only time a lawyer is allowed to get up and walk around the courtroom is when they're addressing a jury. When he or she is in opening statement addressing the jury, or in closing argument addressing a jury. In North Carolina, lawyers must stay seated at all times when examining witnesses
