Top Six Things Muslims Get Wrong About Ex-Muslims

Some of the biggest challenges Ex-Muslims face are the misconceptions that Muslims have about us: there's a lot of inaccurate beliefs about the reasons we left Islam and what we believe today. To the Muslims watching this video, I know you think that Ex-Muslims are confused and misguided, lying to others and maybe to themselves about what true Islam is. I’m here to tell you that isn’t the case.

So to help promote Ex-Muslim Awareness Month this December, this video fact-checks the most common misconceptions/assumptions I've seen from Muslims about Ex-Muslims. Personally, I strongly relate to what the exmuslim youtuber you mentioned said: "It takes one sentence to convert, but a PhD to leave or even criticize Islam." Often, those who criticize the work I do tell me that I’m not qualified for it, as I undoubtedly lack the expertise of an Islamic studies scholar and therefore speak about things I don’t know. The problem is that even the most refined scholars of Islamic studies try to harmonize ancient stories and customs in the present, viewing them through contemporary lenses. They end up talking about an Islam that no one practices—a religion in vitro, chewed over and rendered inert, which is not the religion that people live by. The saddest part is that they are fully aware of this, but their priority is to discredit the work that people like you or me do. On the other hand, Ibelieve that few things are as open to being discussed from the ground up as religion, since it enters homes, couples’ relationships, and the upbringing of children. Even someone humble like me should be able to raise, as best as I can, the ethical issues of a religion that I also experience firsthand, even if only as someone connected to a very observant Muslim family through marriage.

The funny thing is I was a Qurani before leaving Islam and I gave my family a whole explanation about how Mohammed didn't marry Isha when she was 6 and all the positive stuff. To just be shocked that my family don't actually have a problem with a grown ass man marrying a child even in the modern days, and when it happened to my younger sister and they were so happy for her. I gave up on both

I like your calmness and tranquility in busting these myths. I don't like for example apostate prophet's approach which is more inflammatory and mocking in its nature. I personally think your easy going character is more persuasive in making Muslims question their faith. Your approach is also more empathetic, it is undoubtedly more productive in making people question their faith without making fun of them or mocking them

I read a comment on reddit once saying that Ex muslims endure a lot of scrutiny online and in person because over the past 40 years, Islam has become a political identity more so than a religious one.

And it applies here. For some reason, the minute someone says that they no longer adhere to Islam, some lovely people from the ummah accuse ex muslims of being agents of western imperialism and will often accuse them of trying to appeal to racist, xenophobic Westerners who are white.

Even if you don't support Western imperialism, are a survivor of it and hate what the west has done to you, and even if you are strongly opposed to the state of Israel and Zionist nonsense, they'll never be convinced.

But hey, that's their problem. 🥰

i was raised muslim, but i converted to christianity (Lutheranism) a year ago. Atheism still gives me goosebumps but i so no hate toward muslims or athetist (they still gives me goosebumps when they say do they believe in God)

I don't think it was normal in the 7th century for a 6 year old to marry a middle aged man. There are points in the scripture that suggest it was not common - for example, the prophet didn't want to give his daughter to an older man and said she was "too young".

When a Muslim, I witnessed Islam, but I never witnessed Allah -there was no most-gracious, no most-merciful; no all-knowing, no all-caring, no all-powerful. There was just folks quick to anger if I refuse to attribute or submit everything to Him as if He was there.
