MAKE IT FASHION Trailer | TIFF 2022

Few modern art forms are more synchronous than fashion and film. From the inception of the moving image, fashion was a frequent subject of newsreels and short attractions. Yet, both struggled to be taken seriously in the early part of the 20th century. Film was integral to legitimizing and expanding fashion as a medium, with haute couture on full display for global audiences through early cinema and into the 1930s. Designers such as Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Coco Chanel were beckoned onto film sets to sell the Hollywood dream of an attainable glamour, and to spotlight the importance of intelligent and at times provocative costume design. Couturiers and filmmakers thrived in their codependency from the silent era to Hollywood’s Golden Age, to the bold designs of the post-Classical era, to the present. Drawn from the catwalks of the most venerated houses, Make it Fashion celebrates nearly a century of couture on film by presenting contributions from Chanel, Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy, YSL, Prada, Armani, and Jean Paul Gaultier, to name a few. With films reflecting the fashions of the time while also advancing them, and fashion runways looking to cinema (past and present) for inspiration, these two visual media comprise a mutually beneficial relationship of the highest order.
