An Introduction to Past Modals: must have, should have, would have, and could have

In this English lesson I'll give an introduction, with plenty of examples, on how to use the past modals: must have, should have, would have, and could have. This is a difficult topic for many English learners. I will do my best to make it clear how to use these verbs in some situations.

This is by no means meant to be an extensive lesson. In fact, I decided to leave some verbs off the list, and to simply help you learn some of the common ways we use these as native English speakers.

I hope this English lesson helps you, and if you want, please let me know in the comments if you want a more advanced class on this in the future.

Thanks for watching this English lesson about past modal verbs! Have a great day!

⌛ Remember: Always watch the video three times. Twice today with English subtitles on, and once tomorrow with the English subtitles off. This will reinforce the English you have learned!

I could've moved to the U.S, but I ended up staying in Canada. Since it was one of the most crucial decisions of my life, I should've given more thought to it. However, I wouldn't have done anything differently. Frankly, it all worked out for the best. So, I must've done something right, eh? Long Live Canada!

Past modal verbs are one of the most tricky things for a second language learner. I can understand the meaning but when I have a conversation, I shy away from using them. Today's lesson was really helpful for me.
I should have found your channel earlier. Being late is better than nothing. Thanks teacher

this video for 5 minutes probably takes at least 3 hours to find all the places that you show as well as come up with a topic for a new story. I wish You a lot of patience so as not to give up this business and continue to delight the audience with new releases of your versatile, very interesting and informative video tutorials.

The places that you record your videos help us a lot, because there aren't external sounds to distract us. Thanks Bob

Thank you so much for this great video, Bob! You've given the best explanation and examples I've seen here on YouTube for Past Modals. Not an easy subject to master in English as the differences are so subtle at times!

I can understand past modals when someone is using them but I was still doubtful about my understanding about these. Thank you so much for this lesson!!

I would've studied abroad but
I didn't have enough time and money.
I should've hit the books when I was a university student. I could've done that, but I just wanted to hang out with friends.
But now I'm kinda getting the hang of learning English.
Your lessons must have done the trick 😁👏💐 Thanks.
