These are so spot on. My mom sewed a lot of her clothes and she taught me to look for these same things. Loose threads, unfinished, crooked seams, cheap buttons, fabric content percentages, and also how to care for the garment.

I usually find trench coats at thrift stores and I have bought a few of them!

My problem with "cheap" clothing is that it's rarely all bad. It's usually a few details that are off. Eg. I found a heavy wool trench coat at a thrift store and the belt was ugly and damaged and the buttons were missing except one but it was pure lambswool. If you know how to sew you can sort out most of these problems since the best pieces never seem to be in your size! A soft leather tie belt and Buffalo horn buttons plus some taking in on the waist and it's now one of the most luxurious pieces I own. I also trimmed the cuffs with leather since the lambswool isn't as durable as a coarser sheep'swool.

An unlined trench? That's a prop or costume and not real clothing! Run

most people shop online now so they wouldn't be able to do this. this is why i love shopping in person and also why i hate shopping online.

So true! I have an old vintage trench style coat of the Swedish brand Hettemarks and it holds up so well, always hangs so beautifully and is my number one staple. One thing I’d add is if you’re interested in mending yourself look for a coat where the lining is open at the bottom so you can reach all the seams in your coat without having to seam rip the lining. It’s just super handy!

I’ve been through this. Honestly, just buy the real thing. The classic Burberry Kensington or Chelsea trenchcoat. Don’t get anything with excessively cropped, or slim fit or anything with weird print design as these are just fads; just stick to the traditional Burberry trench for that timeless look. Well worth the $2.5k

I go to Goodwill, I always find good quality clothes made 25 yrs ago. Quality has really gone out the window, especially in America.

If you want a good trenchcoat, look for old oilskins or coats intended for shearers/farmers. They are canvas, built like a brick shithouse, very warm and often have removable/customisable hoods and capes that use poppers to attach. Oilskins are also essentially waterproof and require little to no washing because they are dirt, hair, and pilling repellent.

An unlined trench coat gives me the same vibe as those cars you can get in a lot of places for Halloween. Cheap, tacky plastic cut into a coat shape.
